John Cox
Born : 03/10/1983
Height and Weight : 188cm and 117kgs
Sport : Rugby Union and Rugby League
Trains at : CSE, The Pleasance, Edinburgh
Why did you start playing Rugby and did you have any goals to begin with? :
I started playing at the age of 9 when i realised i was bigger than all my friends and terrible at football! Initially i played just for the enjoyment of running over people then at the age of 13/14 i realised that i might have a future in the sport so i knuckled down with my training.
What are your Main Rugby Achievements to Date :
UNION : Scotland Under 18s, 19s and Under 21s. Turned professional at 21 while playing in the south of France, followed by a season playing Pro in English National 1 for 'Rotherhan Earth Titans'. In my Amateur Career i have won the Scottish Premiership twice and the Scottish Cup once. I play for Currie R.F.C. and we are currently on top of the Scottish Premiership.
LEAGUE : Since becoming an 'Extemist' i have gained 3 Full International Caps for Scotland Rugby League and had the Honour to play in a European Cup Final. My Current stats are - 3 Caps, 1 Try.
I am also very privileged to be the Scotland 'Amateur' Captain for the Second Successive Season (2009-2010) and i have received the Player of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009.
What is your Current Training Schedule like? How does it differ between Rugby Union and Rugby League Season?
I train in the gym 4 times a week and i have 2 team training sessions a week. Throughout Rugby League Season and Rugby Union Pre-Season i try and fit in at least 1 Track Session a week which includes a lot of dynamics, footwork and finished off with a sprint session.
My training does differ between the 2 sports. During the Rugby Union season i lift heavy twice a week and my other 2 sessions include a lot of power lifting and conditioning. As the Union season tails off and the League Season starts, i start dieting and focus alot more on speed and agility, conditioning sessions and i increase my rest by a second day a week. I don't want to burn myself out by playing two seasons back to back, so rest is of upmost importance.
What are your current Goals :
I have decided to put my quest of moving back into the Professional ranks of Rugby Union on the back-burner for now in order to concentrate on my current work commitments. This will allow me to continue playing for Currie RFC and play Rugby League at International level. My future aims are to try and help Currie win the Scottish Premiership 2009-2010, play in the Rugby League International Amateur Home Nations and hopefully be selected for the International European Cup 2010 and gain more International Honours.
What Supplements do you use? :
I use Extreme Nutrition's 'Pro-6' daily and 'Build and Recover' for after my training sessions. I am also taking 'Lean-R' to help aid my dieting and conditioning goals.
How much do you feel supplements and sports nutrition help your training?
I feel supplementation provides a physical and mental gain before, during and after training. It allows me to get the most out of myself and the more i gain from the use of proper sports nutrition, the more confident i become in my chosen sport. It is vitally important to reload correctly after training so i can get the best out of myself in the next training session.
What is it that motivates you through a hard session?
The end result. Everybody can go through peaks and troughs with their training, and i'm no different, so i just try to stay focused on my targets. An old rugby coach of mine once said to me "Successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do", so i try and take that attitude into the gym and onto the rugby pitch at every opportunity.
