Name Wayne Hanley
Age 23
Q.1 Why did you start bodybuilding and did you have any goals of competing?
At first I began training because I was studying towards a Sports Studies A level and took up weight training as part of a project. However, during my project I realised that I really enjoyed the challenges that weight training brought. I did not really give much thought to competing until my brother did his first show, seeing him on stage made me think 'I wouldn't mind a go at that'. So the next year I joined the NPA and I've been training with competition in mind ever since.
Q.2 What is your current training schedule like?
Currently I train 5 days a week with my brother and fellow Extreme Nutrition athlete Chris Hanley, and the schedule looks like this;
Monday - Back and Biceps
Tuesday - Chest and Triceps
Wednesday - Calfs and Abs
Thursday - Quads
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Shoulders and Hamstrings
Sunday - Rest
Q.3 How long have you been competing?
My first competition was with the NPA in 2008, in which I did 2 shows. I did not compete in 2009 to make improvements to my physique.
Q.4 What are your main competitive achievements?
NPA Yorkshire Lightweight 2008 - 3rd
NPA Mike Williams Classic Lightweight 2008 - 6th
Q.5 Do you participate in any other sports?
I played cricket for 14 years, and finally gave it up to pursue my passion for competitive bodybuilding in 2008, as I felt it was holding me back from reaching my bodybuilding goals.
Q.6 What weight are you off season and contest time?
I am 5"6' and Off-season I am around 12st 7lb and I am aiming to be around 10st 7lb on stage this year.
Q.7 What are your current competitive goals?
I plan to compete in the NPA this year with the aim of qualifiying for the British Finals in October. My first show of the year will be the Yorkshire Championships at the and of May.
Q.8 Why do you feel you have been able to make continuous gains over the years?
I feel that I have been able to make continuous gains over the years because I always put correct form before heavy weight, this has helped me prevent injuries which can set an athlete back a long way. I also make sure my diet, both off-season and contest, is providing me with the nutrients I need for growth and repair from my workouts, to make sure my hard work is not going to waste.
Q.9 What supplements do you use?
The supplements I currently use are;
Extreme Whey
Extreme Nutrition Kr-evolution
Casein Protein (before bed)
Multivitamin and Mineral
Waxy Maize Starch (post workout)
Q.10 How much do you feel supplements and nutrition help your training?
As I travel around a lot as part of my job, supplements play a major role in helping me to meet my nutritional requirements, as it is not always convenient to prepare a cooked meal. I rely on getting a lot of my protein from my shakes, so the quality of this is important, that is why I only use Extreme Whey because I know if contains the best quality proteins. I also use Extreme Nutrition Kr-evolution, this helps me through my gruelling workouts and helps me to squeeze out those last fews reps that make all the difference.
Q.11 What is it that motivates you through a gruelling workout?
What motivates me through a gruelling workout is the feeling that I get when I know I have given 100% in the gym. If I give any less than 100% then it plays on my mind all week until I can put it right.
Q.12 Who, if anyone, do you want to thank over the years for their help?
Firstly I would like to thank my brother Chris, for always pushing me in the gym and never letting me get away with a half-hearted set. Secondly, I would like to thank my partner Liz for putting up with me, even when I'm on my contest diet and I have bigger mood swings than her. I would also like to thank Gary Thornton, for helping me with my contest diet and prep. Last but by no means least I would like to thank Doug Black and Extreme nutrition for giving me this amazing opportunity.
